Australia The Typeface

An all caps, display typeface that takes inspiration from the arches of the Sydney Opera House, the waves of Bondi Beach & the subtle curves of Uluru.

I began this project to create something unique and to expand my knowledge and passion for all things typography. I felt that to truly understand the aesthetics and functionality of a typeface and why people create it or use it, I had to go through the process right from the beginning. This included finding a theme, right through to execution and dealing with legibility constraints – keeping in mind the introduction of smart watches and their small screens.

I looked into what makes Australia unique by exploring various landmarks and lifestyles. I went on hikes and day trips taking photographs of elements in Australia and what I found was that there were a lot of distinct curves. From the tail of a kangaroo, to the hills of the Six Foot Track, to the Sydney Opera House, to the waves of Bondi Beach, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the MCG and the Uluru.
I used some of these photographs as the foundation for the typeface and implemented these subtle curves throughout the glyphs. The letter A is the feature glyph showing off the arch of the Sydney Opera House.

The project was very interesting and allowed me to have a greater understanding into Typography. It allowed me to explore natural and man-made surroundings and apply that into the glyphs.

The typeface was used on the Ecuador International Football Team’s Jerseys during the Copa America 2016 competition. It has also been featured on Graphic Design Junction’s top 100 fonts of 2015.

Please feel free to download and experiment with it.
